What we do
The Accessibility unit, under the leadership of the Accessibility Commissioner, is responsible for ensuring that organizations are fulfilling their obligations set out in the Accessible Canada Act and the Accessible Canada Regulations.
Our approach is focused on promoting compliance and encouraging organizations to take proactive steps to identify, remove and prevent barriers. We monitor compliance and, if necessary, take action to enforce it.
Promoting compliance
Tools and resources
We create tools and resources to help organizations understand their obligations and our enforcement process.
Engagement and feedback
We conduct outreach activities to increase awareness, and seek input to inform our planning, reporting and activities.
Updates and information
We share updates on our activities and answer questions about the Act and the Regulations.
Monitoring compliance
Inspections
We carry out inspections to check if organizations are meeting their obligations.
Reviews and analysis
We gather, review and analyze data to identify promising practices, challenges, and systemic and emerging trends and issues.
Enforcing compliance
We take action to bring an organization into compliance with the law, and to prevent future non-compliance. We take a graduated approach to enforcement and use different tools, depending on the severity of the non-compliance and the risks.
Our tools include:
- inspections
- production, compliance and inspection orders
- notices of violation (with warnings or administrative monetary penalties)
- compliance agreements to replace all or part of a penalty in exchange for compliance and investments in accessibility
- corrective action plans
